(Seems like I can't get the embedding to work right now, so I'll have to try and do it later...)

A post that was long overdue, probably because I haven't listened to a lot of VOCALOID songs lately. This one was kind of interesting and caught my eye despite being fujoshi bait... in the end I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would. The VOCALOID used is a new VOCALOID (flower) and I'm not particularly fond of its voice, but I really like the music, instrumental, theme and lyrics of this song... which goes to say something, since the art is not significantly appealing (well some of the girls that appear are cute but probably don't play a big part... probably) and again the voice is only mediocre at best. To me it takes quite a lot to make up for those two lacking parts and then come around and still say its a great song...

Speaking of the theme, I do think it's a pretty interesting video-- an angrily passionate pop song rather than happy and sad ones which we see all the time. Anger is usually something I imagine in more of the rock or death metal genre in terms of music, so something that could express such emotion in more of a lyrical pop type environment was pretty nice. Hopefully they'll put it into Joysound in the future and somehow I can find ways to sing it. Angrily. ANGRILY.

Sakura Gakuin

A while ago when I watched Zettai Karen Children I thought that the girls that did the intro (Karen Girls) were an interesting group, and I thought it would be interesting to check up on them later. So for 3 years I went off to do other things and just yesterday I decided to look them up again to see what they were up to.

...First off I would like to say, I never truly believed that there were actual idol competitions like they talk about in Idolmaster and Love Live until yesterday. I guess it was always in the back of my head saying something like "yeah sure yeah right, it's all probably not real" but apparently, there is something called Tokyo Idol Festival... and there really are idol competitions!! I haven't watched through them all yet and there's probably too many idols to list (much more than Love Live/Aikatsu/Idolmaster/etc I'm guessing) so this post won't be on that. It was more of a "omg something like this exists" kind of thing.

Next... I guess it never struck me how prominent the "groups of large idols" was in japan and whether an environment similar to 765 pro exists, but after seeing Sakura Gakuin I'm guessing some places come pretty close. Sure there were large groups like AKB and whatnot but... wow everyone in Sakura Gakuin is so young :V I guess I should have guessed since the Karen Girls video but idols really do train at young age (some of them anyway)... >.>

Anyway I decided to check out a few of their videos and its actually pretty fun to watch. I think its almost like watching irl Aikatsu except... not... but I still think they're worth knowing about. Their voices aren't always the best, but I think given their age and that they're doing performances they're at quite a high caliber, at least some of them anyway. Well it doesn't matter because the videos I want to link aren't the ones with them singing anyway V:

random episode drama about switching... or... something... First one I watched. It was kind of cute and funny. Ok well most of these videos are kind of cute and funny.

As it turns out young idols have hilarious answers to questions! I thought this one was really amusing to watch, I think it paints a nice view of the environment they try to make with the show.

They do graduation parties too! Nothing like the ones we have. :| Speaking of this person, this girl was one of the girls in the Karen Girls group. Also amusingly enough she's the lead singer in the Babymetal pop/death metal group... She's really cute but that she's doing Death Metal kind of makes me sad since her image can be so much cuter than the type of goth death metal is associated with imo ;_;

Another girl of the Karen Girls group also graduated from the Sakura Gakuin group and is actually going solo really soon. Her webpage and debut information is here:
http://www.mutoayami.jp/cam/debut/index.php

It looks quite a lot more mature than when we first saw her Karen Girls and Sakura Gakuin. Well that's what happens after a couple years I guess. V:

There was one more girl but I wasn't able to get much info from the last one. I guess some become more famous and others don't? Sad but probably how these things work. If only idol life was always happy and smiling like these videos...

Random Spring 2014 Anime stuff

I am extremely excited for Magica Wars. It's still up in the air how well it will turn out but I feel like it has really high potential especially considering how amazing the contest submissions are, from some of the absolute best artists on pixiv. If fuzicoco's entry made it to the anime level... well I don't want to miss that.

Still, it's up to studio to make it a work of art, which is what it mostly was with the characters anyway. I guess if the animations and battles are done nicely (and that they occur frequently enough) I can accept whatever bs story they may come up for it, because it probably won't be good coming from an original TV series based on character illustrations. :V

Atelier Escha is also something to look forward to, although I'm more worried about the animation quality for that show given the poster image. Obligated to catch up on the Atelier games before this show starts.

Hmm I guess I should also watch Love Live.

Either way I will probably end up not watching anything until the season is over and then marathoning it mostly. Or maybe I'll remember mid-season and watch like 5 episodes of each series at a time. Still, I feel like it's been a while since I felt remotely excited for any season. I guess we'll have to see how it turns out.

EDIT: in other news aikatsu movie-- well I guess it would happen.

Ignorance

Sometimes people will say "knowledge is power". This is a true statement, because with the appropriate knowledge comes the ability to manipulate and control (tools or human beings, whichever). However, I don't think many people may see this, but ignorance is also a power. Being ignorant in some circumstances is a very strong and powerful concept. The idea of this may seem absurd but in reality, being less aware of knowledge of certain kinds can become a powerful defensive and motivational force. Let us provide a very simple example. A person who takes drugs versus a person who doesn't. Here we can have two situations of ignorance. One is that the person who doesn't take drugs does not know of its addictiveness. This allows the person to be non-dependent on drugs and be able to live his life free of that kind of addiction. Another type of ignorance is the person who is taking drugs but does not know of the health consequences. Perhaps not quite as beneficial as not knowing the addictive power of drugs in itself, but if the drugs are providing the addict with a reasonably content lifestyle, then without knowing about any possible health consequences, could not this person live rather happily as well?

Ignorance is a powerful factor, but the real key to using it properly is to know what to be ignorant of. A highly paradoxical case, but knowing how to be ignorant can be very beneficial. Many sources of doubt and misgivings often come from knowing too much. Of course, there are some that can probably take in such knowledge and still continue to have confidence in what they set out to do. Still, not knowing would be better. Not knowing would mean that there is full 100% confidence (even if it might be wrong) in their beliefs and their goals, and there is nothing perceived wrong about what they will decide to do.

Obviously not all types of ignorance are beneficial. As a researcher myself, I understand how if one attempts to tackle a subject without knowing anything about it it is roughly equivalent to swatting a fly in the dark. Controlled ignorance is what one should think about seeking after. This is not actually a foreign concept, although people may be unaware that they are engaging in it (yes, its quite ironic). This is very prevalent in politics where people will refuse to fully understand the points of the other party. Why they would do something like that, is to keep their faith unwavering and follow their beliefs regardless if in reality they are true or not.

Likewise, both ignorance and knowledge is a powerful tool to use against other people, instilling people what you want them to know, forbidding them from learning what they shouldn't know. People always outcry this as a type of "evilness" but this is perfectly normal. Like many things in life, there is a balance, a balance between knowledge and ignorance. One is not better than the other any more than light is better than dark. So once in a while, consider the ignorance and feel appreciative of what you don't know. Additionally, think about what you should continue to not know about, but also where knowing will be more advantageous. Knowing what to tackle and what to ignore... may be a key to making one better in his/her entirety.

28.1.14

Anime Synthesia

(Disclaimer: I am not actually a synesthete. I think.)

A lot of times when I watch anime, I tend to get hungry. (This is even more so with Rune Factory, but that's because 70% of the game revolves around food and making incredibly good sounding dishes.) I do not know if it is because of this that I began making analogies of anime to food in my head, but for quite some time I've been making some associations of the genres of anime with flavors and textures found in food. I never really had the analogies completely thought out or solidified, but recently when I was thinking about it I realized that perhaps the associations I have in my head may be more "developed" than what I had thought up before, and so for this reason I thought about writing something on this.

It is pretty clear to me that anime is not food, because it would be great to survive on just watching shows all day. Actually, maybe not. But regardless, the way I watch anime, to me, tends to reflect how I think about eating. While some people prefer to watch an episode or two a day and suffice with it, I tend to enjoy marathoning shows, because when watching only a single episode sometimes it feels like I'm not satiated enough-- kind of like having a taste of a good dish but not finishing it. So if an entire series can be considered a single dish, doing one episode is more like trying the sampler at a COSTCO wholesale foods store -- either you try it and you don't like it or you want to eat it all. So, oddly enough whenever I start watch anime I am constantly having the image that I'm "eating" it: as I watch more I eat more until I am full, the dish is finished, or I need to go to sleep because I have work the next day.

Just as anime is not really food, the genres of anime can't really be considered absolute flavors. In fact, I specifically specified the genres as being not just flavors but also textures. When people think of describing food, usually the first thing people would consider is how it tastes. However, texture is also really important. Taking sushi as an example, I don't mind the flavor of fish but the texture between cooked fish and raw fish is significantly different, even if the flavor is mostly the same. The difference between me enjoying cooked fish vs disliking sushi is simply that the texture is different. Anime, too, has its flavors and textures, defined into genres many shows typically get cast into. In the following I present a few genres as an example of how I would make the analogy between a show and a dish.

Moe = Sweet
Moe type shows are the easiest type of show to classify into a taste. I will admit that I may have been influenced through other portrayals of moe, because there has been none to few images and analogies throughout anime and fanart relating the aspect of moe to a sweet-tasting food such as cake. The reasoning behind this is really simple: cute things make a person feel happy, in a similar way that eating something sweet will make you feel happy. Yes, this is not true for everyone, and everyone has different tastes. However, I consider myself a sweet tooth when it comes to anime, so I always look for shows with at least a little sugar in it.
It should be noted that it is possible for an anime series to be too sweet. For me if this happens, I don't necessarily abandon it but I am actually unable to stomach the entire series in one go. This is significant. Making a food analogy, it is possible for example to eat an entire sandwich for lunch but then come to dessert and find that I can only finish a portion of that chocolate cake. It's not that I do not enjoy the cake, but simply that the flavor is too strong to finish right now. I may finish eating the cake later during the day.

Comedy = Crisp
The first thing I think of when I think of generic comedy is chips. Usually comedy shows are the ones I can blow through in one go without even feeling full afterwards, simply because they are airy and lack certain depth to make one feel fully satiated. However, chips are very tasty. Even if they are not fulfilling, when I start eating chips I want to keep eating them. Comedy shows I feel much the same about. They may not satisfy you in the end with their lackluster (if at all) conclusion, but they're still delicious and entertaining to watch.
What about moe comedy shows? Here I introduce a concept that I had been considering when thinking about all this. Genres are not hard-lined categories. Most of them can easily blend into each other. So how does this work with the analogies? Notice that I defined Comedy as more of a texture than a flavor. In that line of thought, Comedy can be placed more easily with "flavored" genres like a moe themed show, to create an analogy similar to a cookie is both sweet yet can be crispy (crunchy?)  at the same time. Hence, you can see shows that begin to have a gradient of flavors: cookies for those more moe-focused, chips for shows more focused on comedic moments.

Action = Meat
Sometimes, I just feel like watching a show where things blow up. This kind of feeling almost relates a type of primal, instinctive drive to eat meat which many people have. While some people really love their meat (and likewise, some people enjoy their pumped up shonen shows) I am typically fine most of the time going without it for quite a while, but a little action and some meat is always delicious to watch at times.
Meat goes even better with seasonings, though. Again, genres can be combined such that moe action shows are possible, comedy shows are possible, or anything else really. Eating meat alone can be fulfilling, sure, but not always enjoyable as having some sauce on top of it, or giving it a different texture such as frying it.

Slice of Life = Bland
By bland here, I mean typical types of staple/starch foods like rice or bread. Usually slice of life on its own is pretty boring. I mean if you think about it, real life is the best example of a "slice of life" show without much of anything at all. Spicing it up with different other genres, even at low concentrations, can make a bland show much more entertaining, in part because the flavor here is not as strong as those that are hard-classified as they would be in their respective genres.
Just as starch foods is a staple for meals, slice of life can typically "fill you up" in terms of your watching quota. It could just be because you're done with watching such a slow show and don't really want to watch more, though. :V

Drama = Vegetables
All of these classifications I have made so far are biased and this one is probably the most biased classification I have made yet, mainly because I am not usually a fan of drama. Most of it is either under the radar (covered with other flavors so I don't care much about it) or very distasteful such that I don't really want to eat (or watch) it anymore. That's not to say I don't like any types of vegetables at all, but certainly if I could go for something different to eat I probably would. (And, seeing how I'm not required to "eat an anime series", there's no harm skimping on the healthy foods simply because they taste bad).
Drama could be done well though. Of course it could, or else all those shows in the top hit spots wouldn't be there at all. But for me the drama is (almost) always the least important aspect for the taste of an anime series. Just like girls with glasses, typically its simply better without it.

Horror = Bitterness
Bitterness is an acquired taste. Give a 5 year old child some coffee and I'm pretty confident the child will not like it. Horror, to me, is much the same. You can't like it immediately when you see it the first time, because your first instinct is to be repulsed and run away. Still, many people like horror, just like people can get accustomed to coffee. For me, it would have to depend. Straight up horror is typically never pleasurable, but perhaps if prepared delicately and tastefully I can enjoy certain elements of horror too... typically combined with other elements.
I going to seem to go out on a limb here and state that the Ecchi genre is, to me, chocolate. Why chocolate? First off, when thinking about sweet and bitterness people will consider them pretty much opposites, since sweet foods taste "good" while bitter food tastes "bad". But there is one food that actually combines them pretty well: chocolate. Chocolate is (from my experience anyway) a sweet and bitter food at the same time. The level of sweetness and bitterness of course changes (milk vs dark chocolate) but this is essentially the nature of chocolate. In this respect, erotic content is much like a combination of "moe" and "horror". Here horror isn't the absolute "make people scream" type of horror but more like "make people disgusted" kind. Erotic content and the concept of intercourse IS disgusting, and many people think so. But at the same time, it can give pleasure, a similar type of sweetness that a moe genred show can garner. So in essence erotic content in a show can be in a way both sweet and bitter - delicious and repulsive - and ultimately addicting to some. To me, the nature of this and the nature of chocolate are therefore very similar. (As a side note chocolate is considered an aphrodisiac, I think, so its not like this is a completely original idea I thought of... chocolate is pretty ero by nature V: )

Mystery = Liquids
When eating solids you can typically eat a certain amount, and then stop, and the amount that you eat is quantifiable. Liquids, however, are a bit different. Where you stop and where you begin again is arbitrary unless you really go down to the molecules. Furthermore, for liquids one may typically drink and continue drinking until you can't really drink anymore. Why I attribute mystery or suspense type genre to liquids is the exact kind of feeling. In a mystery when you're watching a series, despite being sectioned out into episodes, the show ends in suspense so you don't really have a "stopping" point - you're obliged to keep drinking. Furthermore mysteries to  me have a pretty high tendency to get "full" - once I'm finally finished with a mystery or suspenseful series I'll probably stop for a while, and maybe just think about what I just ate (or drank?). The nature of mystery is just such that you don't know when to stop but when the cup is finally empty you are probably done (well, until someone pours you another cup).

So in the end I classified what I imagine how certain genres "taste" with certain anime dishes, but even with these genres listed some things might be different. For example, dishes with the same genre could taste differently. A moe show may have a different sugary feel than another moe show, which would cause preference in flavor for one over another (think possibly brown sugar vs white sugar). Also, and possibly the most important aspect is this is how I may see anime, but everyone sees things differently. In a way I am intigued how other people may see certain series. Would fujoshi see bishonen much the same way as I had classified Moe, or would the flavoring be different to them? It's hard to say, since I don't think many people if at all would think of anime as a type of food.

23.1.14

Rune Factory 4 (Unfinished)

Things I keep accidentally doing.

1. Eating things I don't really want to eat, because the "use" button (B) is the same button normally used as "cancel". (Yes I totally wanted to eat that weed and poison myself.)

2. Give people and pets stuff I didn't really mean to give, because they stand right next to me and I was actually wanting to pick up stuff instead. ("Oh my, thanks for giving me this level 10 crop that took 90 days to grow!")

3. Talking to people/pets when I want to pick up stuff instead. There should be a "BTW You're stepping on my egg I want to pick up" option in every menu.

3. attack and destroy save spots/treasure chests. Because I really didn't want to save, really.

4. Allies attack and destroy save spots. Because Amber really didn't want me to save, really.

Well all in all its a pretty fun game despite the controls I need to get used to for the reasons above. I don't think I would find a normal harvest game really that interesting unless I like the characters (Harvest moon has potential, but I will never touch Animal Crossing). Rune Factory though, because of the character designs and the fact that there are RPG elements, I felt like it was "almost" the perfect game. There are still things I wished they improved on though (besides the terrible controls, which again for reasons above).

While the character designs are great, the avatar models are pretty terrible. I hope in the future they can improve on the graphics to something like Neptunia's level (probably impossible for a 3DS...). More importantly I'm not terribly sure about that plotline... then again I'm progressing really slowly in plot considering that you could stall it forever in order to raise your crops.

As expected of a game like this its rather grind-heavy. Grinding for high level crops, grinding your cooking skills, grinding for items, grinding for levels... each one in itself doesn't take a lot of time to do, actually, but given the limited time you have per day sometimes I find myself doing all of one thing and not getting done what I wanted to do for other things. Especially harvesting when all your crops are ready. Other times, I finish things faster than I thought I would and then I'm like "well crap what am I going to do now?" This game takes even more planning than the Atelier games sometimes...

There's still a lot of other things about this game I haven't check out yet (like marriage) although my interest is already waning after I finished the first arc of the game. Nevertheless the game is quite amusing to play. I'll probably keep at it for a while then switch to Ayesha since Escha is coming out later... time managing games about time management!

Also, Amber calls me "Master" after I start dating her = +10 points for amusement.

My Classic Fairy Tale Can't Possibly Be This Cute

Kotaku posted something about classic novels and stories being "light-novelfied" so that they have anime portraits, for better or worse.

And I am totally okay with this.

In fact they should go overseas and publish these kinds of novels in English. With stories like Hitchhiker's Guide. Light novel version of Hitchhiker's? I would read that again. V:

Guided Fate Paradox (Starting off)

Finally after conferences and tests and not having my PS3 around I'm finally getting around to playing this game. Pretty hyped up right now so I'm just typing out a few of my thoughts:

>Choices between English and Japanese dub: As a somewhat love live fan this would be blasphemy to not choose Japanese dub. Kind of looking forward to seeing what Kotori plays... I should be able to recognize her voice, right? Right? >.>

> Nico as main heroine: When I first learned of this I was thinking "Aww this main heroine is totally different from how Nico is in the show!" ...Then within the first 10 minutes I'm like "...OK, yup its her, voice and personality."

> The game starts off with some lottery analogy. SCHOOL IDOL FESTIVAL GASHA ANYONE??

Neptunia Anime (Unfinished)

Yes I finally am watching it, it's a miracle huh.

(and several posts ago I said I'd be watching it while it aired, what a lie)

Some things I noticed:

1. When Vert played 4 Goddesses Online she literally seemed to have screenshots of Neptunia V on her monitors. That was pretty amusing to me.

2. Nepgear is awesome

3. When Nepgear said she was afraid that she'd get stronger than her sister, I was like "Hey, this exactly happened in all my games with her" since I always powerlevelled Nepgear the most in those games. Sorry about that Nepgear!

4. Nepgear is superior

5. I'm not too big of a fan of natural Uni, nor am I a fan of drill hair, but for whatever reason I always found transformed Uni really cute.

6. Nepgear is better though

7. I wasn't really surprised at anything in the anime... until the end of episode 5. Peashy at the end of episode 5 made really go "HOLY CRAP DID NOT EXPECT THIS THIS IS AWESOMEEEEEE", good job guys. Well I guess its not surprising, but for whatever reason I was just like "kitaaaaaaa"

8. Moar Nepgear plz

As if my 2nd to last comment wasn't enough I'm only at the end of episode 5. Looking forward to watching more Nepgear of the anime.

Pretty Cure x10

Since I finally managed to finish pretty much all of Pretty Cure so far (exceptions: a few of the regular movies and Yes PreCure series), I figure I can give an overall generalized evaluation of what I thought of each season. It probably won't have spoilers since I'm just giving a generalized opinion, except maybe some of the precure warrior names (in particular, which is my favorite out of each series).

In general Pretty Cure has become a rather decent series in that it doesn't fall into the trend of being too predictable and boring with its episodes. This of course varies from series to series, but it was well worth watching from the beginning up until now to see how much change the precure series has gone through over the years.

Season 1: Pretty Cure + Season 2: Pretty Cure Max Heart
Favorite Character: Cure White (Shiny Luminous is kind of cute... though...)

Unsurprisingly these seasons (IMO) are the worst seasons out of the entire Pretty Cure series essentially because they fall for every trope and cliche in the book, whether it be fillers, obvious plot, etc. It is also the start of the trend of having flashy but useless objects being the source of all the magical girl powers, obviously giving toy makers the signal to profit off the series as much as possible. This is possibly the most prominent reoccuring theme in all the Pretty Cure series, as if they needed the profits from the toys in the show to continue generating PreCure series year after year (and maybe they do!). Honestly though I have no idea how the show got popular at this point because it was pretty bad overall and I'm sure there were other series in the same genre that were better.

Season 3: Pretty Cure Splash Star
Favorite Character: Cure Egret/Cure Windy

IE Pretty Cure 2.0. The theme is still the same in that there's only two main characters, but the art and designs have significantly improved, and the characters feel much better developed (including the enemies, who I found very amusing from time to time). The elemental theme might be considered cliche to some people but I thought it was a pretty nice touch. The whole "Splash Star" part is pretty unique as a superpower but I think this might have been a start towards Toei's trend of having a little more originality here in there with their Pretty Cure series. As it was one of the earlier series I watched, this series is one of my favorites (even if it doesn't compare that well to the others).
My only qualm with this series is that the transformed Pretty Cure warriors have some incredibly bad hairstyles. I have no idea what the Pretty Cure designers were thinking. :|

Season 4: Yes! Pretty Cure 5 + Season 5: Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!
Favorite Character: Cure Lemonade (Although what kind of name is Lemonade...)

IE Sailor Moon imitators. I felt like the art designs for Yes Pretty Cure 5 went down from previous Splash Star (I don't know if there's a reason behind that) and generally my interest in this series was much less because of that. The enemies were also not as appealing as they were in Splash Star. I didn't finish either of the series, and I didn't really feel the need to so I basically watched up until all the important characters were introduced in GoGo! and then some, then moved on with other series. Cure Lemonade is pretty adorable though, especially in some of the movies...

Season 6: Fresh! Pretty Cure
Favorite Character: Cure Pine

Here I felt like they were trying something REALLY new and Pretty Cure had almost a much more mature feeling to it - the characters look like they were older as well. The theme of the enemy was also different and provided a different kind of apocalyptic view than seen in the previous seasons. I especially liked the interactions between the enemies in this series because they in a way reminded me of the interactions of a few friends I used to have. In that respect I enjoyed the enemies more than the main characters, almost.
Going along with the maturity theme I feel like the topics they talk about in this series is also occasionally more "adult" related than in previous series - For example, there are occasional romantic themes seen in this series in contrast to all other pretty cure series. If Pretty Cure seasons were actual people and we were comparing season is most mature, this season is it hands down.

Season 7: Heartcatch Pretty Cure
Favorite Character: Cure Marine

Ah yes the most popular and loved Pretty Cure series to date. I heard it was because they had some former Gundam director helping them out but certainly it deserves its fame which stands out to the rest of the series. I probably wouldn't say its my favorite series but I can rank it high up there, if only because of Cure Marine. It is perhaps the best series to introduce to a person curious about what Pretty Cure is, since its plotline feels fairly interesting, the art style is rather unique and the characters (both the protagonists and the enemies) are pretty well developed. It is also the first Pretty Cure season (and, to date, the only pretty cure season) that does NOT have an overly hyped up and caffeinated main protagonist heroine (which actually made for some interesting interactions in some of the All Star Movies).
Heartcatch Pretty Cure has undoubtedly the best transformation scenes out of all the Pretty Cure series.

Season 8: Suite Pretty Cure
Favorite Character: Cure Rhythm

This series has gotten mixed reviews, and in general most people don't seem to like it. Perhaps it was unfair since it came after Heartcatch, as it does have a few rather interesting aspects to it, but its poor reception might be due to them trying too hard in originality this time. The mascot character for this show I felt was really entertaining and cute; for me the mascot in Suite is the best out of all the pretty cure seasons. The theme of music was also interesting. I think the part where it was mostly overdone is probably in that this series has WAY TOO MANY SPECIAL ATTACKS, so much that the viewer probably forgot most of them by the end of the series and say "wait, did I see that attack before?" There may have been various plot and character issues with the series too (and Cure Melody is kind of ugly :| ) but at least for me I don't think its as bad as it could have been (ie seasons 1 and 2).
Also I liked Suite Pretty Cure's intro and overall music the best so far out of all the Pretty Cures. Kind of appropriate considering music is its theme.

Season 9: Smile Pretty Cure
Favorite Character: Between Cure Peace and Cure Beauty

IE Yes Pretty Cure 2.0. with improved graphics. My guess is that since Suite's originality didn't work out so well they went back to something that did work well (...I guess Yes Pretty Cure worked out well even though I didn't like it too much?) and revamped it to something new. The characters are themed almost exactly the same way down to their personalities except for one of the colors, so it was pretty ":V" all around. I felt like the overall plot for this show was subpar compared to what I've seen earlier, but there definitely some genuine episodes which blow all other Pretty Cure episodes (including ones from Smile as well) out of the water. If I were to rewatch the series or show it to someone else I'd just pick those episodes out and move on to the next series.

Season 10: DokiDoki Pretty Cure
Favorite Character: Cure Rosetta

IE Fresh Pretty 2.0 (or 0.5 because they're younger?) I say this because there is a very similar theme used in Fresh and it is much more elaborated in DokiDoki Pretty Cure. So far I think what Doki has going for it is its slightly (?) more unique plotline compared to the other series - its not completely predictable and following the same tropes as before (except the merchandise thing). Character-wise, they're not the most unique characters, although I think its hard to come up with very unique ones this late into the season. High(er) quality animation (relative to previous series) at this point seems like a given now, so there's no real comment about that.

Future of Pretty Cure: It's always interesting to see what they might be planning next, although lately its just rehashing previous seasons. One thing I thought was interesting is that they never used the theme of jewelry, which I thought would be a very hot theme for mahou shojo shows (Maybe because something like Jewelpets took it already?). Hence I wouldn't be surprised if in the future there will emerge characters like Cure Ruby and Cure Sapphire, but we never know. Here's to hoping that there are more interesting Cure warriors Toei can give us in the future.

By the way DX3 is the best All Stars movie thus far.

In Rewrite, there is a scene where the main character watches one of the heroines read something off a large map, and when the protagonist himself tries to read it, he realizes that on the map there are lots of symbols. You can obviously tell that 99% of the improvements they made into this game, where all the investment as gone into... is in the 3D CG models they use when the characters are talking to each other.

On an unrelated note for the miniscule amount of people who recognize my presence online, my laptop died so I will not be available in the evenings anymore, at least for a while. Although, even if I still had my laptop I'm probably not around anyway since during that time I'd be playing Disgaea 4.

10.3.13

Diva Arcade

In general I felt that overall gameplay was easier, especially for easy and normal modes. I think this is expected because people are paying money for every 1 or 2 songs so if they made the game too hard it would be stupid and unappealing. Still, there are a few things that increase the difficulty, directly or indirectly:

1.) The combo button presses. Its not the the combos themselves that are hard (although it might take some getting used to), but that it seems to break your chain of concentration of following up what to do afterwards. At least how I play, I read which buttons to press ahead of time (in the case I didn't already memorize which button comes next), but when the combos come up all I see is those flashy red buttons and lightening effects, and I couldn't figure out as easily what was the button that I was supposed to press next.

2.) (Project Diva PS* players only) Arrangement of buttons. In general I think its easier, but the fact that the triangle is now on the other side of the circle throws me off once in a while. This is because on the PS* games, the triangle is just above the circle so you can slide your thumb right above. I think that while the general populace does better with this arrangement, people used to the PS* games might also need to break their traditional idea of the arrangement on the PS*.

Or maybe it's just me and I suck.

3.) That stupid flashing bar on the bottom that indicates if you're going to fail or not. This is the most annoying and terrible thing in Diva Arcade and I'm not sure if it's on purpose or if it's a flaw. At least in the PS* games if you're going to fail you don't really get distracted, and you only end with a "not clear" at the end. Diva arcade has this highly flashy and annoying "YOU'RE GOING TO FAIL IF YOU DON'T KEEP THIS UP" bar on the bottom and is really really distracting when you're trying to concentrate. I hate this feature the most. Maybe there's a way to turn it off, but I don't know how.

The people at Round 1 says that the trial period ends at March 18th, but if the feedback turns out to be good, they'll bring it back permanently around April 18th. So maybe people going to AX (coughmetacough) can have a chance to play.

EDIT: on a completely unrelated note, I realized I went to play Diva Arcade on 3/9. WHO WOULD HAVE KNEW

4.3.13

Skull Girls

THIS GAME HAS TOO MANY BUTTONS.

Even if you don't count the tag/partner buttons which add like an extra order of combinations you can do with the game, having 6 basic buttons is just so overwhelming. Even if you don't count any motion-moves (forward kick or something), your basic arsenal has already doubled - 6 moves standing, 6 moves crouching, 6 moves in the air. I've had 6 moves standing before USING that kind of motion-moves, maybe max 4 crouching type moves using motion moves (I had to get used to this too) and rarely any aerial moves past 4 as well. But this game DOES HAVE MOTION-MOVES so it actually has TOO MANY FREAKIN BUTTONS TO PUSH.

WITHOUT EVEN GETTING INTO THE COMMAND MOVES/SUPERS. Well, in return for having such a crapload of buttons it looks like their special skills are more limited, each character having like 2-3 command moves and 2-3 supers. Well, when you're typical 5aabc combo has now turned into a 5aabbcdf and its 10 other variants ("do 5abbdfe for a launcher!" "say what") I guess you don't need to care about special command moves anymore.

But this time I did write something up. I hope I can have enough motivation to do this again some time, though. Review/Summary of the paper is as follows.

=====

Long term effects on synapses are currently a hot topic in the neuroscience community as it is associated with learning and memory. Two of the major forms of long-term plasticity, known as Long Term Potentiation (LTP) and Long Term Depression (LTD), are studied extensively to understand its underlying mechanisms. In computational neuroscience, we try to use models to further our understanding of LTP and LTD; this paper is just one example of how one may try to go about this.

The schematic of this paper seems rather simple: conduct experiments which will induce LTD, then use System Identification to model it. Nevertheless the work required for such a paper is extensive. This model in particular focuses on mGluR-dependent LTD, in contrast to NMDA-dependent LTD (as is most other models currently available out there). For the experimental portion of this paper they use a chemical known as dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) to stimulate mGluR-dependent LTD... I’ll assume that the references support that this is indeed mGluR-dependent.
For modeling they use a Systems Identification approach, a top-down method where they attempt to extract the dynamics of LTD using transfer functions. They used four different datasets with differing DHPG concentration, duration of DHPG application and sampling rates; the input was defined as the DHPG concentration while the output was the fEPSP (post synaptic current) slope percent change as a result of application.

The transfer function used is of particular interest to me as it is more abstract and thus difficult to grasp than the experimental portion. From the paper, it seems the focus of the transfer function is the polynomial expansion using a “backward shift operator” z^-1. Basic definition of a backward shift operator is:

z^-1 * Y(t) = Y(t-1)

essentially, then, z^-1 = Y(t-1)/Y(t), a ratio of the past inputs compared with the current input. The polynomial coefficients are then estimated depending on a range on order (z^-n represents nth order) and time delays (1-10). The best model was determined through 3 statistical criteria (R^2, Akaike, Young) which each have their own criterion and reason for use.

The results of this paper are simple yet significant. For lower sampling rate (0.0033 Hz)Applying DHPG for 5 minutes at 15 uM gives about 20% reduction in slope size; application for 15 min give about 30% reduction; and applying 30 uM DHPG for 25 min also gives, on average, 30% reduction, but the effects take longer to stabilize. The authors state that the models approximate an integrator, meaning that time of application for input (5, 15, or 25 minutes) changes the response of the system.
The paper then discusses the results of the higher sampling rate (0.033 Hz). It gives a reasoning on why higher sampling rate should be used, but raises the question as to why they did not use this higher sampling rate for their previous experiments, as well, and instead have the higher sampling rate to be separate from the results of the others.
In all their results the highest order with the best fit turns out to be 2nd order. Judging from how the pattern of LTD looks, this seems accurate since there does not appear to be complex nonlinearities in LTD. The paper goes on to describe LTD as a certain subprocesses (serial, parallel, feedback), second order meaning there are two subprocesses, one with fast time constants and one with slow time constants. The results they give suggest there could be either parallel and/or feedback structures for their model.
In terms of the subprocesses, there is still some lack of understanding on behalf of myself to completely know how the coefficients and time constants relate to them, therefore I may need to determine how to work with them better.

As the experiment itself was rather conceptually simple, the discussion doesn’t seem to add much more to what is already known. Dynamics of the system is briefly mentioned. Additionally, they present evidence to support the experimental protocols which they used and explain a bit more about the modeling results with how it compares to the currently know physiological processes.

Overall the paper is a useful reference to see how System Identification can be used to model physiological data and how to interpret the model. As for its significance and usage, it seems a bit too rudimentary to have such a model in a larger scale modeling scheme such as EONS. The conditions are too specific and the experimental data to support the model is not enough. Nevertheless such a model can prove useful, not only through analyzing the dynamics, but as more is learned about mGluR related LTD, it can serve as one of the stepping stones to bring the entire process of synaptic plasticity together, which would then serve use to EONS in the future.

Dat Miku Voice. O.O Nothing else to say about the song but WOW THAT VOICE SOUNDS SO DIFFERENT.

浮かれバケモノの朗らかな破綻

Alright that title is too long so I don't think I'd want to translate it right away.

This song, I don't really understand the lyrics, but that doesn't matter because the video is pretty well done. The singer is male and the song is okay, but what's really cool is the video and the story behind it. Just watching video makes you laugh and feel happy inside, it's something you don't really listen for the music but instead for the animation. There was a recent miku one like that before, but I really liked this one, including its designs.

I mean the girls in this video are so cuuute! :V

BTW the title on google translates it to: Collapse of cheerful monster spree. Uh, okay google. Cheerful monster spree it is. :V

ケッペキショウ

I haven't posted a vocaloid song in a while, it seems. I haven't really been listening to a lot of recent VOCALOID either. The more recent ones didn't sound good until this one showed up, although there was also this other really neat GUMI song which I think I never posted here... I should do that some time later. For now there's this one, and I happened to remember to post it this time. :V

The instrumentals in this one sound really cool, so that's why I like it. GUMI isn't too bad in singing this either. The video seems dramatic but I don't really know the meanings behind the theme as my Japanese is rather limited, so :V It's a neat song though so I can see why it reached nearly #1 not too long after it was released.

The tital says "keppeki shower"... eer I think. What? :V what does google say? "Fastidiousness show" I see. No, I don't.
