Its ironic how the Madoka anime didn't really stir me at all but I got hyped up and excited about Grief Syndrome. At one point yesterday I was interested in the 3rd stage boss and someone gave me some info on the wiki sites, and then I realized speculating on the witches's magi forms, and magi's witches form (except Sayaka of course). A lot of people have done this already, but I'm just making inferences based on what I saw in the anime and played in Grief Syndrome. Sayaka (and Madoka for that matter) don't get any guesses obviously but she provided a great reference in how the witch relates to the magi, and this is a starting point for theorization. Or BS, term you prefer.
Well obviously (especially on the Magi part) this would probably have quite a bit of spoilers but really, who HASN'T already watched Madoka? :V
Witches as Magi
--
Getrud: The first impression is the Magi was a flower girl. Either she owns a flower shop, was the daughter of a flower shop girl, or really liked flowers. I think regardless she had some association with a flowershop. The next thing particularly noticable (at least in Grief Syndrome) was that there was some obsession with mustaches. Either she had some mustache fetish or someone she knew (and probably liked) had a mustache. This could be someone she idolized, her boyfriend, or (my guess) her father. Going by the father theory, its most likely she made her wish revolved around the father. I could see two possibilities: One is that she loved her father but maybe something happened to him (he's going die, or going far away) and she made her wish to keep her father around. The other is the complete opposite: her father was abusive and she wished her father would disappear. In the former case the catalyst towards witch can easily happen if it became like the latter, that is, the father becomes overprotective or abusive, leading to psychological damage; in the latter case, there could have had some dramatic effect for her father's disappearance, like the arrival of a new father with no changes (and same mustache?) or a family breakdown. She probably either used a whip or shears as a weapon, or even something like both (sharp object at the end of a whip).
Charolette: A typical cheerful sick girl. Probably really liked sweets. Her first form (the one that easily got beaten up) I speculate is more likely a stuffed animal she really liked when she was alive. It was probably given to her by someone she liked. I speculate she has a situation that's probably the opposite of Sayaka, but at the same time similar: She wished herself to become healthy again so she can be with the one she loves, but the one she loves stopped caring for her after she wasn't sick anymore. She's probably the type that stuffs herself when she's depressed to try and not show it. In fact, probably right before she became a witch she had a habit of eating more and more sweets to try and repress her depression, only to have it grow more. After she became a witch she contained herself in the stuffed animal, an indication that she really didn't want anyone to know or bother about her problems. After that "contained" form was destroyed, her true self (her true witch) emerged, free to express her anger and hatred in a ravenous manner.
H.N. Elly (Kristen): This is the witch I take most interest in. It occurred to me immediately in the anime (from the TVs and monitor theme) that she's probably a Hikikommori. Even the name implies it; I didn't need my friend's explanation that H.N. means Handle Name to know that. She has two names, meaning one has to be an alias. A very likely story for her is that she simply wanted to make friends. She didn't know how to express herself very well so she became a magic girl by making a wish to have friends. For a while she was happy because she had friends and she felt like it was a good cause to defeat witches and be a Magi, but over time she realizes her friends are fake. The fakeness of her friends causes her to realize that she never really overcame her problem at all. Furthermore there may have been online drama - perhaps she had online friends before she became a Magi, but something happened that made her lose her online friends later on after she became a Magi. This can be pretty traumatic. So what can she do? Tell people to "Die.". And that's probably what her fake friends did after she said it, since they were puppets anyway. That only furthered her degradation into a witch, who now haunts people and gets people to get together (over the internet most likely!) and have death parties. If you remember the plot, a group of people got the witches kiss to get together and die... very likely a tribute to Elly's request to her fake friends. Its likely her fake friends turn into those angels which hover around Elly's witch (and are even in the background on Elly's screen). Somehow I found Elly to be really tragic, maybe its because I can relate to her hikikomori status. :(
Elsamaria: I can't say too much considering she only has like 10 frames in the anime, and its all from Sayaka going mad and goring her out. In the game she's a b*tch to beat though orz. There are two things that are probably evident: She uses her hands a lot, and she was probably pretty depressed and crying all the time. From that one can possibly infer that first off, she might have been mute. This would mean she had to use her hands to communicate most of the time. The second is that she was a romantic, or was extremely prone to emotional bouts. If this is the case it wouldn't be surprising if she used her wish on something like making someone she liked to love her, or even just understand her. Of course things like this can always go terribly wrong (like "you don't really love me!" or just him leaving after he finally knows what she's talking about) which can lead into her crying her eyes out and turning into a witch. She might also be black (Disclaimer: This is not meant to be a racial statement... on purpose anyway) and that might also have played an effect into her traumatic experience... but that's only if the blackened part of the game had any meaning. The black part might have just been an indication of Sayaka going crazy, so I think that's less of importance than the other parts.
Walpurgis Night: There are rumors going around that this is actually Homura's witch. While that may be fine and true, it would leave out two whole theorizing/BSing sessions for me so I'll ignore that theory for now!
If this witch lives up to her name, it wouldn't be surprising if she was A.) The first Witch, B.) A Queen of some sort, or C.) both. I'm making the assumption that its C. If that were the case, a typical scenario could be that the original Magi was a hero for the country and her country had lived in prosperity for the longest time, until something showed up and destroyed her country. Of course, this could trigger her into becoming a witch (and her death being faked) while also bringing the destruction of the original invaders (or whatever brought about her country's downfall). Likely she became jealous of all other great countries and so she goes on a rampage off to destroy any good succeeding civilization and bring it to ruins. The shadows which she summons could either be her servants or the souls of previous Magi who she defeated (instead of them turning into a witch), which she would then absorb to make herself more powerful.
Magi as Witches
--
Mami: She became a popular character really quickly for obvious reasons. However this means we only have about 3 episodes of information we can work with her. Given the situation of her contract, its actually pretty tricky to think up a situation for her turning into a witch. She has to really think that the life she saved for herself isn't worth living. Perhaps this could be done if someone sacrificed herself for Mami's sake, or she outlives everyone around her. Of course, that didn't happen.
Her witch environment, I speculate, would have a lot of cars driving around and (not surprisingly) occasionally crashing into each other. Lots of BANG sounds. Magi would probably have to blow up the cars trying to run over them as they get to Mami's witch. Mami's witch form, staying true to her original powers, would have guns for arms, legs, and, uh, other significant parts. Likely they are held together by ribbons since Mami seems to have some fascination of ribbons. Additionally, if it has relation to her wish, the ribbons and guns probably regenerate even if they are attacked (her wish to "stay alive" gone awry). There might be some beating heart underneath all the ribbons which Magi would have to get to and destroy in order to defeat Mami's Witch.
Kyouko: The great thing about Kyouko is, her history is already there and ruined! Theoretically if she had been any weaker she would have been a witch by now. Her witch environment probably would be heavily religious based, with crosses and praying people everywhere trying to attack the Magi. I imagine there would also be her spears lying around everywhere as well; heck, they might even be part of the crosses. For her witch... hmm... not sure, a stick person? :V Made out of apples! Or at least an apple for a head, with parts carved out to make a face. She'll probably have lots of spears flinging towards you so you'd probably want to watch out for that.
Homura: I think the interesting thing about Homura is that if she turns into a witch she might not even be aware of it thanks to her powers. Homura's only desire was to save Madoka, and in the event that she failed to do so and turns into a witch... she might as well keep on trying. In fact she might create her own time-space continuum where she lives out her fantasy as having saved Madoka. This would make other Magi have a really hard time trying to get to her since she doesn't even exist on the same time plane. Instead, her witch would have to summon other Magi to their time plane, where they have to live in Homura's fantasy (possibly, living the same day over and over again) forever. Likely they aren't even aware of where the witch is because she might still be in Homura's original human form.
The other issue is even if they figure out she is a witch and do battle with her, she can simply reset time in her dimension to start over. Magi would literally have to destroy the entire dimension -- something on the scale of what Madoka did -- in order to defeat Homura's witch form.
